READ for Life
READ for Life is a charitable organization within the Read Literacy Foundation. This organization was created to increase access to dyslexia-related assessment, therapy, educational materials, family education, and advocacy.
READ stands for
Resources, Education, and Advocacy for Dyslexia.
Our mission is to help identify students with characteristics of dyslexia and reduce barriers to scientifically researched interventions that support successful reading and learning.
Resources
Connecting families and educators with tools, guides, and materials to support students with dyslexia.
Education
Funding access to scientifically researched reading therapy and dyslexia assessments for eligible students.
Advocacy
Raising awareness and championing policies that ensure every student with dyslexia gets the support they deserve.
Dyslexia
Centering everything we do around a deep understanding of dyslexia and the students and families it affects.
Areas of Support
Every dollar donated to READ for Life goes towards removing financial barriers in four key areas. The services below are provided by approved vendors in our local area and are funded through READ for Life.
Dyslexia Screening & Assessments
We fund access to qualified dyslexia assessments so families aren't stopped by cost before they even get answers. Donations help cover the expense of professional screening and comprehensive evaluations for eligible students.
Two widely used, research-based instruments help provide a clear picture of a student's reading profile:
Test of Dyslexia — Screener
A brief, efficient screening tool designed to quickly identify students who may be at risk for dyslexia. The TOD-S evaluates key indicators such as phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, and letter knowledge — providing an early signal that a more comprehensive evaluation may be warranted.
- Quick identification of students at risk for dyslexia
- Suitable for classroom or small-group administration
- Helps determine whether a full diagnostic evaluation is needed
Test of Dyslexia — Comprehensive
A full diagnostic battery that provides an in-depth evaluation of reading-related skills — including decoding, encoding, phonological processing, reading fluency, and comprehension — giving evaluators the detailed data needed to confirm a dyslexia profile and inform individualized instruction.
- Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation for dyslexia
- Measures decoding, encoding, fluency, and comprehension
- Supports individualized education plans (IEPs)
Both tools are administered by qualified CALT professionals.
Dyslexia Therapy
Structured literacy therapy works — but it's expensive and often out of reach for families without financial support. Your donations go directly toward funding therapy sessions with qualified providers for eligible students.
READ for Life supports access to structured literacy programs proven to help students with dyslexia build strong, lasting reading skills:
Building the Foundation
Build is an introductory structured literacy program designed for early learners and students who need to establish foundational reading skills. It focuses on phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, and basic decoding — laying the groundwork for fluent, confident reading.
- Targets foundational phonemic awareness and decoding
- Designed for early learners and beginning readers
- Delivered by trained literacy specialists
Soaring to Reading Success
Take Flight is a comprehensive, multisensory structured literacy curriculum developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. It is designed for students in grades 2–8 who have been identified with dyslexia and provides systematic, explicit instruction in phonology, word study, fluency, and comprehension.
- Comprehensive multisensory structured literacy curriculum
- Developed by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
- Designed for students in grades 2–8 with identified dyslexia
- Covers phonology, word study, fluency, and comprehension
Junior Excellence in Training
JET (Junior Excellence in Training) is an accelerated structured literacy program for older students and those who have already built some foundational skills. It provides intensive, targeted instruction to help students close reading gaps more quickly and transition toward grade-level independence.
- Accelerated program for older or more advanced students
- Intensive, targeted instruction to close reading gaps
- Supports transition toward grade-level reading independence
Therapy programs are delivered by Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs) and other qualified structured literacy providers.
Educational Materials
Funds help purchase specialized tools, decodable books, and learning materials that students with dyslexia need but families often can't afford — so the right resources are never out of reach.
Family Education
We use donations to provide workshops, guides, and community resources that equip parents and caregivers to understand dyslexia and advocate effectively for their children at school and beyond.
